Fibroids Q & A
What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are tumors that develop on the wall of your uterus. While knowing you have a tumor can feel scary, fibroids are almost always benign or noncancerous.
As many as 80% of women develop uterine fibroids at some point in their lives, often without symptoms. Fibroids are most common in women in their 40s and 50s.
Uterine fibroids can range in size from tiny tumors that the naked eye can’t detect to growths that can enlarge your uterus.
How Do I Know if I Have Uterine Fibroids?
In many cases, you can’t. Because fibroids often don’t cause symptoms, many women never know they have them until a routine pelvic exam uncovers them.
When uterine fibroids do cause symptoms, you may experience:
- Pelvic pain
- Feeling like your lower abdomen is full
- Increased pain during your menstrual cycle
- Heavy bleeding during your menstrual cycle
- Anemia
- Trouble fully emptying your bladder
- Lower back pain
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to make an appointment at North Atlanta Women’s Specialists. The team can check to see if you have fibroids and, if so, start treatment to bring you relief.
How are Fibroids Diagnosed and Treated?
The North Atlanta Women’s Specialists team uses diagnostic tools to determine if you have uterine fibroids. Usually, this process starts with a pelvic exam and ultrasound to find the fibroid and measure its size.
If your fibroid is causing symptoms, your doctor explores treatment options with you. Medication can manage some fibroids. The North Atlanta Women’s Specialists team also offers myomectomy, a surgical procedure to remove fibroids.
The team specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, meaning your myomectomy requires minimal incisions and, consequently, minimal downtime and post-operative discomfort for you.
Alternatively, they can perform a hysteroscopic myomectomy. During this procedure, they use specialized tools to reach through your cervix to remove your fibroid without the need for any incisions.
While it’s rare for uterine fibroids to cause infertility, surgically removing the fibroids through either procedure can restore the ability to get pregnant to women who were affected by fibroids in this way.
Your North Atlanta Women’s Specialists provider’s goal is to help you choose the right treatment for fibroids to bring you relief in the most effective way possible.
If you think you may have uterine fibroids, call North Atlanta Women’s Specialists, or make an appointment online today.
